Special BMW M cars are rare and highly sought-after because of their limited production run. The most recent of these rare M-badged Bimmers, the BMW 3.0 CSL that was unveiled back in 2022 to mark the 50th anniversary of the M division, only had 50 units made. But luckily, it seems a successor is in the works.
In a recent interview with BMWBlog and Vice President of Customer, Brand, and Sales at BMW M, Sylvia Neubauer, confirmed that the brand’s small-series team has a new project lined up.
“We are discussing things, but we need to find the right time to do it. Be assured, we share the same dream and passion. We have been talking with Adrian van Hooydonk [Head of BMW Group Design] and the team who does the small series planning, and there is a slot reserved for BMW M,” She stated.
Neubauer hinted that the division is looking into untapped segments, exploring opportunities to develop new high-performance models using existing BMW platforms. This is a departure from the small-series team’s latest work – the BMW Concept Speedtop – which, despite being based on the BMW M8, did not feature any M badges.

BMWBlog reports that whatever is in the pipeline will likely be more affordable than the 3.0 CSL, which commanded a EUR750,000 (approx. RM3.72 million) price tag. Reusing an existing platform, rather developing a standalone model, could help in achieving that. Still, we expect the future limited M model will cost significantly more than a standard M car.
That said, the debut may not be any time soon, as BMW is busy preparing for the launch of its all-new Neue Klasse line-up of vehicles and the all-electric BMW iM3, which could itself be a potential donor car for a future special model.
The idea of a special car based on the yet-to-be-released electric BMW iM3 is certainly a tantalising one and seems to align with the M division’s exploration of new market segments. For now, we will have to wait to see what BMW M has in store for motoring enthusiasts.
