2025 BMW M2 CS becomes the fastest compact car to lap the Nurburgring

BMW has set yet another Nurburgring record—this time with the new hardcore M2 CS, the most potent version of its smallest performance model. Piloted by BMW M development engineer Jörg Weidinger, the car completed the full 20.8 km Nordschleife track in just 7:25.5 minutes, beating the previous record set by the Audi RS3 (7:33.123) by a whopping 7.6 seconds and establishing itself as the fastest compact car to lap the “Green Hell”.

The M2 CS has completely obliterated the standard M2‘s previous record of 7:38.7, shaving off over 13 seconds. This marks a significant performance leap, bringing it closer to its bigger M3 and M4 siblings, all of which have lapped the track in under 7:30. Notably, the M4 CSL holds the record for the fastest lap around the Nurburgring by any production BMW, with a time of 7:18.137.

Only recently revealed on May 28, the M2 CS packs an uprated powertrain that produces 530 hp and 650 Nm from its twin-turbo inline six-cylinder engine—an increase of 50 hp and 50 Nm over the standard M2. Power is sent to the rear wheels only via an eight-speed M Steptronic transmission.

According to BMW, the M2 CS benefits from approximately 30 kg of weight savings, thanks to the use of carbon fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP) in both its interior and exterior components. While the car comes standard with M light-alloy wheels, we suspect that the record-setting model may be fitted with even lighter alternatives – although to be considered a record holder in the Compact Cars category, everything on the car has to be offered to customers from the factory.

BMW M GmbH Managing Director, Franciscus can Meel said, “The BMW M2 CS has achieved a significant milestone with its lap time of 7:25.5 minutes on the Nordschleife, showcasing the potential for combining performance, technology and exceptional driving dynamics into a single vehicle.”

“We are proud that the M2 CS has once again set a new benchmark in the compact car class with this lap time,” he added.

In Europe, Prices for the standard BMW M2 start from EUR77,500 (approx. RM385k), while the new record-setting 2025 M2 CS will be significantly marked up to a starting price of EUR115,000 (approx. RM572k) when it launches in late summer—likely between August and September.

While the M2 CS has yet to go on sale, Malaysians can still get behind the wheel of BMW’s fiery compact performance machine—the standard M2. Here, it’s priced from RM693,100 on-the-road without insurance, inclusive of the BMW Service and Repair Inclusive (BSRI) programme, which covers a five-year unlimited mileage warranty and five years or 100,000 km of scheduled servicing. Without the BSRI package, the price drops to RM650,800.
