Engine oil must have SIRIM certification starting next month, confirms KPDN

Starting next month on April 7, 2025, all engine oil products must have a SIRIM certification to ensure its authenticity. This is according to the Trade Descriptions Order 2024 which will take effect on the date, which concerns the certification and marking of engine oil for motor vehicles.

The Minister of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN), Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali, says that the enforcing of this act will stop counterfeit engine oil products to be sold to the public, reports Bernama.

“This new order will enable consumers to identify the sale of genuine motor vehicle engine oil in the market, thus curbing the sale of counterfeit oil in the market which can pose safety risks and accidents on the road.” said Armizan during the press conference, at the Petronas Melaka Lube Blending Plant in Tangga Batu Industrial Estate.

The KPDN minister adds that the government had issued the order to engine oil manufacturing companies last October, and had given them six months to comply with the directive.

“KPDN in collaboration with SIRIM has been organising engagement programmes since 2022 involving almost all major players in the motor vehicle engine oil industry in the country,” the minister said. “Strict action will be taken against any importing company, distributor, seller who sells uncertified products and does not have a valid compliance label from the authorities.”

The KPDN minister also noted that since January 2019, there have been over 240 complaints received by the department relating to fake engine oil products. As a result, there have been 36 case actions taken, seizing fake engine oil products valued at over RM1.15 million in total.
