Oh Subaru, how could you stab us with a double-edged sword like this? First you unveil the new WRX STI S210 but then announce that the model will only be available with a CVT.
However, once the sting of betrayal has worn off, the S210 does possess all the expected performance gains of models emblazoned with the fabled S-series moniker.
While this Subaru WRX STI S210 previewed at Tokyo Auto Salon is a prototype, it is pretty much representative of the production version that will go on sale in Japan around the second quarter of the year.
Only 500 units will be built and Subaru says the S210 is based on the current WRX S4 STI Sport R EX sold in Japan. The FA24F 2.4-litre turbocharged boxer-four gets upgraded intake and exhaust components with a retuned ECU that pushes out more power, 300 HP to be exact. Torque is a healthy 375 Nm.
The transmission is limited to the aforementioned CVT, or the Subaru Performance Transmission as they call it. It sends power to the ground via the brand’s famed all-wheel drive system.
To tighten up the handling, there are additional bracing points and retuned adaptive dampers and springs. The forged BBS wheels are wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tyres in a square setup. Behind those forged wheels are six-piston Brembos up front with improved pads.
Setting the S210 apart from the garden variety WRX are cosmetic bits on the exterior such as a full body kit comprising front and side under spoilers, a rear diffuser as well as side garnish pieces. The black grille gets some red accents and everything is finished with a dry carbon wing. Of course, you’ll find sufficient S210 emblems.
The highlight of the interior should have been a manual shifter but since that’s off the table, the carbon fibre-backed Recaro seats with power adjustment will steal the limelight. Parts of the dash are also wrapped in suede.
