Japan’s electric vehicle (EV) market is experiencing a significant boom, with sales of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) reaching nearly 9.5% of the total market in the first half of 2024. Notably, Chinese automaker BYD has made a strong entry, capturing a close-to-3% share of the EV segment. This growth suggests a potential shift in consumer preferences within the Japanese automotive industry.
According to the Japan Automobile Importers Association (JAIA), battery electric vehicles (BEVs) experienced a rise in sales, now representing nearly 9.5% of the total Japanese auto market. This marks a two percentage point increase compared to last year, with a total of 10,785 BEVs sold. Notably, BYD captured 10% of the total imported BEV market share.

According to industry sales data, BYD captured nearly 3% of Japan’s EV market share in the first half of 2024. It was reported that BYD sold 1,084 cars in Japan in the first half of 2024. This achievement is particularly noteworthy considering BYD only launched its first electric car in Japan, the Atto 3, on January 31, 2023. This rapid growth indicates a strong initial reception for BYD’s offerings in the Japanese market.
BYD’s sales figures in Japan for the first half of 2024 show an 88% increase compared to the same period in 2023. This growth resulted in BYD moving from 19th to 14th place in the import sales rankings for Japan. Sales in June 2024 continued this upward trend with a 60% year-on-year increase, reaching 149 units. To further establish its presence in the Japanese market, BYD is aiming to expand its dealership network from the current 55 outlets to 90 outlets by the end of 2024.

Toyota, on the other hand, has been relatively slow in transitioning toward fully electric vehicles. While they offer some hybrid options, their pure electric vehicle offerings remain limited. This could be a contributing factor to BYD’s success, as consumers seeking a dedicated electric car with a wider range of options may be turning to BYD.
