China finally gets the BYD Dolphin we’ve had since 2023 – larger 44.9kWh & 60.5kWh batteries

The BYD Dolphin has just received an update in China, giving the all-electric hatchback larger battery packs and longer driving ranges. Despite this, the Dolphin’s starting price tag has been retained at RMB99,800 (approx. RM64,662).

Offered in four variants, namely Vitality, Free, Fashion, and Knight, the BYD Dolphin continues to be built on the brand’s e-Platform 3.0. The three lower variants now get larger 44.9 kWh BYD Blade battery packs, translating to a 420 km CLTC range.

The previous iteration of the base-spec Dolphin was fitted with a 32 kWh battery pack which gave it a CLTC-rated range of 302 km. Now, the 44.9 kWh battery is made standard across the three cheaper Dolphin variants.

The range-topping Knight variants get an even larger 60.5 kWh battery pack, which translates to a CLTC-rated range of 520 km. The previous top-spec Dolphin came with a 50 kWh battery pack, giving the hatchback a 420 km CLTC range.

Suppose these new figures sound familiar to you because it is. In Malaysia, the BYD Dolphin made its launch in July 2023 and is offered in two variants, namely the Dynamic Standard Range and the Premium Extended Range.

Since launch, the Standard Range has been fitted with a 44.9 kWh battery pack, allowing the all-electric hatchback to travel as far as 340 km (WLTP) on a single charge. The Extended Range variant is packed with a 60.5 kWh battery pack, giving it a WLTP-rated driving range of 427 km. So yes, the Malaysian-spec Dolphin has gotten the “updated” battery packs since last year, ahead of the Chinese market.

Like the Malaysian-spec BYD Dolphin Standard Range, the more affordable variants of the Dolphin in China continue to be powered by a front-mounted single motor setup that puts out 94 hp and 180 Nm. Supplying power to the top-spec variant in both the Malaysian and Chinese markets is the same front motor setup pushing out 201 hp and 310 Nm.

The exterior and interior kits of the updated BYD Dolphin remain largely the same, with its connected LED headlights and taillights, as well as the rotating 12.8-inch touchscreen infotainment display on the inside.
