SCOOP: Volvo V60 to be discontinued in Malaysia after final batch sells out

Wagon Wednesdays are no more, at least for Volvo Car Malaysia. According to a source close to the matter, the Volvo V60 is set to be discontinued here in Malaysia, after the final batch of vehicles is sold out.

While no specific reason was mentioned, it’s not hard to guess that it’s down to low sales volume for the estate/wagon body style here in Malaysia – its elder sibling, the Volvo V90, too suffered similar fate several years ago.

Despite its dashing good looks, it appears Malaysian customers are still more inclined towards the SUV body styles, of which the Swedish carmaker has plenty to choose from: the XC90, XC60, XC40, and soon, the EX30 and EX90 fully-electric models too.

Intriguingly, while the V60 and V90 were initially discontinued in the UK last year as part of a larger move towards an SUV-only line-up, the Swedish carmaker has recently decided to reintroduce the wagon models back in the country, citing renewed interest in the station wagon body style.

The Volvo V60 and V90 are historically the brand’s weakest-selling products globally. According to sales figures published by the company, the two wagon models only contributed to 44,600 units combined sales. In contrast, the XC60 SUV alone recorded over 228,600 units sold within the same year.

As the Volvo V60 is locally assembled here in Malaysia and exported to other markets in the region, VCM’s decision to discontinue the Volvo V60 could also result in a knock-on effect on the overseas markets.

For now, the Volvo V60 is still available here in Malaysia in a single Recharge T8 variant, priced at RM321,888. It’s powered by a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrain consisting of a 2.0-litre turbocharged and supercharged inline-four engine and an additional electric motor, offering up to 462 hp and 709 Nm, and a fully electric driving range of up to 90 km.
