Leaked: Smart #5 SUV – 4 powertrains, over 550km range, to debut this year

Earlier in April, Smart revealed the Smart Concept #5, giving us a glimpse of its upcoming SUV, which will be its largest one ever. Now, what seem to be images and details of the production version of the Smart #5 have been “leaked” by China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT).

Described as a mid-size SUV, the Smart #5 measures 4,705 mm long, 1,920 mm wide, and 1,705 mm tall, and is underpinned by a 2,900 mm long wheelbase. Upon its debut, the #5 is set to rival the likes of the BMW iX3, Mercedes-Benz EQE SUV, and the Tesla Model Y.

The Smart Concept #5 came with a rugged-themed exterior. The production version still looks outdoorsy but with its ruggedness toned down by quite a bit from the concept. It also looks more sporty, making it one of the best-looking Smart all-electric models thus far.

Like the Smart Concept #5, the production #5 still retains the concept’s blocky shape, along with the wheel claddings, roof racks, and flush door handles. Its front and rear bumpers also look stylishly aggressive, giving it some outdoor rugged vibes.

The connected LED headlights setup has also been brought over, and surprisingly, the roof light bar is also included among the accessories collages submitted to the Chinese ministry. The latter could be offered as an optional item.

However, things like the “X” pocket knife on the roof, the fender-mounted screen that shows info like the door lock status, as well as the suicide doors from the concept are all absent. The production Smart #5 is also expected to feature lower ground clearance, with one of the contributing factors being the all-terrain tyres being swapped out for more conventional ones. According to the filing, the #5 could come with 19 and 20-inch wheel options.

Images of various variants of the Smart #5 have been included in the filings, including one that has red accents throughout the car, with red brake callipers. This could turn out to be the flagship Brabus variant, which is offered with the brand’s #1 and #3.

There are also images of various variant badges, including ones that read “Summit Edition” in silver as well as “Performance” in either red or silver. Curiously, there are no “Brabus” badges to be seen here. However, these might be subject to change as the car makes its official debut.

The Smart #5 is reported to be offered with four powertrain options, featuring rear-wheel drive (RWD) and all-wheel drive (AWD) setups. The sing-motor RWD options make either 340 hp (metric) or 363 hp (metric) and will come with lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery packs.

The dual-motor AWD options will consist of a 224 hp (metric) front-mounted motor and a rear-mounted motor that makes 363 hp (metric) or 422 hp (metric). Combined, this setup will put out up to 646 hp (metric), making the Smart #5 the most powerful Smart EV ever.

As revealed previously, the Smart #5 will also come with batteries with capacities of over 100 kWh, the largest ever fitted to a Smart EV. This is claimed to allow the #5 to go beyond 550 km (WLTP) on a single charge.

Also first for a Smart vehicle is the 800 V architecture that underpins the #5. This allows the car to be juiced up from 10 to 80% in just 15 minutes.

No interior photos of the Smart #5 have been included in the filing, but we can expect the production model to feature an interior similar to the concept. The Smart Concept #5 sports a 3-screen setup, consisting of a digital instrument display, as well as an infotainment touchscreen head unit paired with a front passenger screen.

Smart has confirmed that the production version of the #5 will make its debut in the second half of this year (2024). It will be offered in China first and will eventually make its way to Europe. Hopefully, it will reach Malaysian shores too.
