Proton to unveil a “greener future” on 12 June – name for Geely Galaxy E5 based EV to be announced?

Proton is teasing a “greener future” on its social media page, and it will likely be unveiling its new EV brand name. Set to happen on June 12, 2024, at 6 pm, Proton is inviting you to watch the unveiling on Proton’s official Facebook page. Proton’s first EV will likely be based on the newly unveiled Geely Galaxy E5.

Back in May this year, Proton announced its “Proton EV Brand Name Contest” which invited Malaysians to name its upcoming EV lineup. In the competition poster, the front silhouette of a car was featured, depicting something that looks like the Geely Galaxy E5. While Proton has yet to confirm which Geely EV its new EV will be based on, the silhouette strongly suggests the Galaxy E5 will pilot Proton’s EV lineup.

Pro-Net Chief Executive Officer, Zhang Qiang said, “This contest isn’t just about naming a brand; it’s about inviting Malaysians to be integral participants in shaping the future of mobility. Proton is grateful for the support we received from Malaysians over the past 41 years and aims to embark on this EV journey with people at the forefront of its vision.”

The Geely Galaxy E5 made its world debut at Beijing Motor Show 2024. It is built on Geely’s GEEA 3.0 platform with cell-to-body integration (CTB) and uses the Galaxy 11-in-1 intelligent electric drive motor. It is available with a fully electric powertrain and a range extender one.

There are two battery sizes for the fully electric Geely Galaxy E5 – 49.52 kWh and 60.22 kWh. The former provides a CLTC range of 440 km and 530 km respectively. A single electric motor drives the front wheels and it makes 160 kW (218 hp metric).

It is about the size of a Honda CR-V, measuring 4,615 mm long, 1,901 mm wide, and 1,670 mm tall. Its wheelbase measures 2,750 mm long, which is slightly longer than the CR-V’s. Inside, the Geely Galaxy E5 sports a typical Chinese EV layout with a large touchscreen head unit and a minimalistic digital instrument cluster.

Proton has announced that over 22,000 entries have been received for its EV brand name competition. What do you think Proton’s EV should be called?
