Proton has announced that it managed to sell 12,522 cars in May 2024, adding up to a year-to-date sales of 62,697 units for the first 5 months of the year. Proton’s sales in May are 13.6% higher than the previous month while its year-to-date sale is 273 units higher than in 2023.
As for its market share, Proton estimates a 19% market share based on an estimated total industry volume (TIV) of 330,236 units. Proton also managed to export 509 units of its vehicles in May alone, its highest-ever monthly export in 2024.

Proton Edar Chief Executive Officer, Roslan Abdullah said, “Following a quiet month in April where sales were affected by festive holidays, May has seen a return to positive growth as TIV has increased both year-on-year and month-on-month, reflecting the resilience of the local automotive industry. With the cumulative TIV until May already making up 44.6% of Malaysia Automotive Association (MAA)’s full-year projection of 740,000 units, we believe there is still room for growth in the local automotive industry.
“Entering the second half of 2024, Proton will be focusing on growing sales via updates to our existing models while also concurrently taking our first steps towards entering the EV market. By leveraging on the strength of our partner, Geely, it is not a question of if but when Proton will be revealing our own electric vehicles so do pay close attention as there are many exciting announcements on the horizon,”
Of the 12,522 cars sold in May 2024, the Saga recorded 6,119 sales, naturally being Proton’s best-selling model. It is followed by the S70 with 2,011 units, the Persona with 1,645 units, the X50 with 1,407 units, the X70 with 523 units, the Iriz with 452 units, and the X90 with 364 units. There was also 1 backlog of the Proton Exora delivered.
