Next-gen Mazda CX-5 planned with hybrid option, brand’s first BEV platform to debut in 2027

In a recent financial result briefing by Mazda, the company presented that it plans to add a hybrid option for the next-generation Mazda CX-5. Besides that, Mazda also plans to debut its first battery electric vehicle (BEV) platform to the world in 2027.

The Mazda CX-5 is currently in its second generation which has been given a recent facelift (at least in Malaysia) to keep it competitive in its segment. With this new development, the upcoming generation of the family SUV is in the works with a more eco-friendly powertrain.

A hybrid powertrain is not new for Mazda as the recent debut of the “CX” series SUVs has shown hybrid powertrains with petrol and diesel options. The Mazda CX-60 was the first Mazda to showcase the brand’s new plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrain which consists of an inline-4 2.5-litre petrol engine. The Mazda CX-80 also has a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) inline-4 petrol option as well as a hybrid inline-6 diesel option.

As for the hybrid powertrain planned for the upcoming generation of the Mazda CX-5, the company has yet to disclose any details. The presentation slide only states “plans to install Mazda hybrid in the next CX-5”. And the Mazda CX-5 in its second generation already has a hybrid option albeit a mild hybrid (MHEV) powertrain. It is also only available for the European market and is referred to as the “M Hybrid”. The next-generation CX-5 will likely get a full-fledged hybrid system.

The current-generation Mazda CX-5 that we have in Malaysia right now gets 3 petrol powertrain options which include the 2.0L SkyActiv-G, the 2.5-litre SkyActiv-G, and the 2.5L turbocharged SkyActiv-G. The CX-5 also has one diesel engine option in Malaysia which is the 2.2L SkyActiv-D.

Another piece of news is that Mazda plans to introduce its first BEV-dedicated platform by 2027. Although Mazda has debuted the Mazda MX-30, it was built on the same platform as the petrol-powered Mazda CX-30.

And as for the Mazda EZ-6 that recently debuted at the Beijing Motor Show, it was developed by Changan and not Mazda. The EZ-6’s counterpart is the Deepal L07.
