Mugen debuts kit for FL5 Honda Civic Type R – better aero, reduced weight, single exhaust

M-Tec Co. Ltd, better known as Mugen, has launched its latest parts for the FL5 Honda Civic Type R. Said to be developed based on the racing spirit of the “Extreme R Mugen” concept, and with the goal of building, literally, the ultimate Type R, the company has collaborated with Japanese motorsports racing driver, Tomoki Nojiri, in this project, who played the role as the development driver.

Mugen showcased two separate concepts of its performance parts for the FL5 Honda Civic Type R at auto shows such as the Tokyo Auto Salon and Osaka Auto Messe. The concepts were namely the Honda Civic Type R Mugen “Group A” and Civic Type R Mugen “Group B”. The parts launched here are specifically based on the “Group A” concept. Mugen says the “Group B” parts on the other hand are still under development.

Mugen says the aero parts for Group A have been designed especially to further improve the Civic Type R’s aerodynamic performance. The Mugen team has put the parts through repeated computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis and wind tunnel testing.

As a result, the aero parts contribute to a 25% increase in downforce, as compared to the OEM FL5 Honda Civic Type R. Mugen describes this as functional beauty – delivering style and performance enhancement simultaneously.

Among the aero parts included with the Honda Civic Type R Mugen “Group A” package is the front under spoiler. Not only does it look aggressive, but the under spoiler also contributes to downforce.

Along with the side skirts and rear under spoiler, the front under spoiler is finished in gloss black. This is to further emphasize the car’s low and wide aspects, if it were a racing vehicle, as described by Mugen.

At the back is an unmissable huge rear wing. Mugen says its shape and design were determined through CFD analysis and multiple test drives on the racetrack. Its dry carbon end plate also helps with significant weight saving, although not specified by how much.

As for the handling side of things, the Honda Civic Type R Mugen “Group A” package comes with a set of exclusively designed 19-inch “FR10” forged aluminium wheels. Finished in Diamond Black, Mugen says the wheels have been developed in collaboration with high-performance wheel maker BBS to ensure the rigidity of the wheel.

Compared to the OEM FL5 Civic Type R wheels, the FR10 units are lighter by a whole 10 kg. There are also newly developed racing nuts and racing lock nuts, which are made of a high-strength material. The material used here is specifically chrome molybdenum, also known as SCM435.

Additionally, Mugen has included a set of Yamaha Motor’s Performance Dampers. Specially optimised for the FL5 Civic Type R, the dampers not only improve ride quality and steering stability but also reduce car-body vibration.

Moving inside, the Honda Civic Type R Mugen “Group A” package gets you goodies such as the MS-C full bucket seats. Made of mesh fabric, the seats not only hold the driver and front passenger well but also aid in weight saving.

Shift your attention to the middle, and you will find the centre console made of carbon fibre, along with e a shift knob wrapped in Alcantara. Mugen says these two details will evoke a sense of excitement when hopping into the Civic Type R.

At this point, you might ask, “Hey, what are the modified LED taillights and single exhaust tips all about?” Well, Mugen is still developing those parts, including the sports steering wheel inside. So stay tuned for those.
