Tengku Zafrul: Total EV chargers in Malaysia have exceeded 2,000

During the launch of Tesla’s new charging station in Gamuda Cove Today, MITI Minister, Tengku Zafrul gave an update on the number of EV chargers in Malaysia. In his speech today, he mentioned that from a recent meeting, it was reported that the total number of EV chargers in Malaysia is 2,020, finally surpassing the 2k mark.

This is a big jump from the last figure reported earlier this year by MAA with 1,434 chargers consisting of 1,117 AC chargers and 317 DC chargers. Prior to this, MITI has announced that it would revise its “10,000 EV chargers in Malaysia by 2025″ target since it was deemed too aggressive given the status quo of EV chargers in Malaysia. If the government is still targeting 10,000 EV chargers in Malaysia (regardless of the timeline), we are currently at 20% progress.

In his speech, Tengku Zafrul also mentioned that the government is currently developing its best practices for EV shipment and delivery within the next 6 months. This is to ensure a safe and seamless delivery of EVs at our ports.

The breakdown of the 2,020 EV chargers in Malaysia was not detailed, but it should naturally consist of more AC chargers than DC chargers. The last reported number of 1,434 chargers saw AC chargers making up 78% of the chargers.

The expansion of the EV charging network has been mapped out previously by the government in the “Garis Panduan Perancangan Petak Pengecasan Kenderaan Elektrik” (GPP EVCB). On a zoomed-out map of Malaysia, it appears that the future 10,000 EV chargers very well cover the peninsular and East Malaysia. Interestingly, the document also details the distribution of the chargers by state. From what we see in the document, there are plans for 900 EV chargers in Kuala Lumpur, 100 chargers in Putrajaya, 50 chargers in Labuan, and 250 chargers in Kelantan. In an expansion map shared by Tesla today, it appears the brand will be adding a Supercharging station in Kuantan soon.
