There’s a new rival for the BYD Atto 3 in Malaysia, and it is the newly launched 2024 Chery Omoda E5. If that name sounds familiar, that’s because Chery is already selling the petrol-powered Chery Omoda 5 in Malaysia. This electric version of it costs RM146,800.
So not much is different with the electric Chery Omoda E5 in comparison to its petrol counterpart, at least on the outside. You get the obvious closed-off “grille”, automatic closing shutters, and a set of EV 18-inch wheels with aerodynamic caps. Follow Eu Jin in this video for a quick walkthrough of the Omoda E5.
Powering the Chery Omoda E5 in Malaysia is a single electric motor setup, producing 204 hp (metric) and 340 Nm. With a front-wheel drive (FWD) setup, the Omoda E5 is capable of a 7.6-second 0-100 km/h acceleration time.
In the underfloor of the Chery Omoda E5 is a 61 kWh battery pack that provides the Omoda E5 with 430 km of range (WLTP). The all-electric SUV can be charged at a maximum AC charging rate of 9.9 kW, and can also handle DC charging rate at a maximum charging rate of 80 kW. The latter can juice the car up from 30 to 80% in 28 minutes. The Omoda E5 is also capable of vehicle-to-load (V2L) function at a rate of 3.3 kW.
Inside, the Chery Omoda E5 features a redesigned dashboard with a touch-screen console that replaces the touch-panel climate control panel present in the regular Omoda 5. There are also two floating 10.25-inch screens which act as the digital instrument display and the touchscreen infotainment display. There is also the Qualcmomm 8155 chip which is said to provide smoother operation, especially on the screen.
Included in the price of the Chery Omoda E5 are a 7-year/150,000km vehicle warranty, an 8-year/160,000km battery warranty, and an 8-year/160,000km drive unit warranty which covers the power motor, power motor control unit, power battery management system and the vehicle’s control unit. Additionally, Chery Malaysia is also offering a one-to-one exchange if the battery’s state of health falls below 70% during the warranty period.
