GAC Emkoo previewed in Malaysia – X70, CR-V rival to launch in Malaysia in 2024

Alongside the GS3 Emzoom, GAC Malaysia, represented by WTC Automotif, today also brought out the Emkoo as a preview ahead of its launch later this year. As usual, actual details about the car are scarce at the moment, but we’ve already experienced the car during a recent media trip to China – so check out the video over here if you want a closer look. Otherwise, enjoy the live photos below.

The GAC Emkoo is a C-segment SUV, that will eventually compete against the likes of the Proton X70, Honda CR-V, and Mazda CX-5 when it makes its official debut here. Like its younger sibling, the GAC Emkoo also emphasises heavily on design – a more mature look, mind you, but equally futuristic.

These design elements all also have their own (weird) names, like the “Eyes of Revelation” headlamps, “Illuminant” V-shaped grille, and the “Quantum Lightsabers” tail lights. We’re sure they have their fans, but to us, it’s just a little weird – sorry. At least, there’s no denying that the car definitely looks unlike any other on the roads today.

In terms of dimensions, it’s one of the largest in its segment, measuring 4,680 mm in length (2,750 mm wheelbase), 1,901 mm in width, and 1,670 mm in height. The GAC Emkoo looses out to the all-new sixth-generation Honda CR-V in length and height, although it does have a longer wheelbase, and also measures 35 mm wider.

Similarly, the interior of the GAC Emkoo is also heavily design-focused, characterised by a tubular motif that is repeated throughout the cabin. Despite its focus on looks, though, it still doesn’t discount on usability; a large temperature knob is integrated into the tubular dashboard trim, so drivers won’t have to reach for the screen while driving.

Otherwise, interior highlights of the GAC Emkoo include a 10.1-inch “floating” central touchscreen, a digital instrument cluster with LED speed indicators on the side, automatic climate control, a jewelled gearshift lever, and powered leather seats.

There are no indications yet as to which powertrain option the GAC Emkoo will eventually be launched with here in Malaysia, although if we were to guess, it will likely be the 1.5-litre turbocharged inline-four engine as seen on the GAC GS3 Emzoom to simplify local production operations. The 1.5-litre mill is also the sole powertrain offered in neighbouring Philippines.

In this configuration, the GAC Emkoo boasts an output of 177 hp and 270 Nm, with all power sent to the front wheels via a seven-speed wet dual-clutch transmission. In China, the C-segment SUV is also available with a 252 hp 2.0-litre turbocharged engine option, as well as a hybrid option with its powertrain co-developed by GAC and Toyota.
