New Mitsubishi Triton variant teased for Malaysia, final hurrah before next-gen model?

Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia has put out a teaser for a new variant of the Mitsubishi Triton pick-up truck with the tagline “Something different is coming”. Off the bat, we can see the car wearing a white paint job, with some red decals across the truck bed.

However, upon brightening up the image, we spotted some familiar design details present in previous models of the Triton. First up, it looks like this new Mitsubishi Triton variant will be sharing the same front fascia with the already discontinued Triton Phantom Plus Edition that was launched in Malaysia back in 2022.

This upcoming variant of the Mitsubishi Triton also wears the bumper and red front bumper guard found on the Phantom Plus Edition. Its grille is also painted black with a thin chrome strip that runs across it, while its wheels look suspiciously similar to the Phantom Plus Edition’s too. Some bits from the Triton Phantom Plus Edition that are clearly missing here include the roof-mounted spotlights and the muscular-looking grey door guards.

If the Triton Phantom Plus Edition is anything to go by, this new variant of the Triton could be based on the Premium variant, and not the range-topping Athlete. It is also expected to retain the 2.4-litre MIVEC Turbo Diesel VGT engine that makes 181 hp (metric) and 430 Nm. Paired with a 6-speed automatic gearbox, power can be sent to all four wheels via a part-time four-wheel drive (4WD) system.

Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia says that the new Triton variant will be making its launch soon. Are you looking forward to the new pick-up truck? Let us know in the comments!
