Chery to launch a sub-RM100k model in Malaysia in Q4 2024 – Tiggo 4 Pro is that you?

Chery Malaysia has announced in a press conference today that it is planning to launch a sub-RM100k model by this year. In the words of Chery Malaysia Product Director, Michael Chew there is an “opportunity to come into the volume game” in Malaysia. With that, the carmaker “will be offering something more affordable for the rakyat” by this year, which could come under the RM100,000 price point.

The carmaker’s current line-up in Malaysia consists of the Omoda 5, which is a B-segment SUV, and the Tiggo 8 Pro, which is a D-segment SUV. Both models made their launch in Malaysia in July last year.

During the Chery brand preview in 2022 here in Malaysia, two other models were also previewed alongside the above-mentioned SUVs, namely the C-segment Tiggo 7 Pro and the budget-oriented B-segment Chery Tiggo 4 Pro.

With the Tiggo 7 Pro being an X70-rivaling C-segment SUV, to expect its price to undercut the Omoda 5 is certainly impossible. This essentially leaves the Chery Tiggo 4 Pro as the model that is most likely the one he was referring to.

Dimension-wise, the Chery Tiggo 4 Pro measures 4,318 mm long, 1,830 mm wide, and 1,670 mm tall, and is underpinned by a 2,610 mm long wheelbase. Powering the Chery Tiggo 4 Pro is a 1.5-litre turbocharged inline-4 engine that is also found under the bonnet of the larger Tiggo 7 Pro in its lesser powerful form. Paired with a CVT gearbox, the mill makes 147 hp (metric) and 210 Nm.

A more budget-friendly 1.5-litre naturally-aspirated 4-cylinder engine option is also offered with the Tiggo 4 Pro. Mated to either a CVT gearbox or 5-speed manual transmission, the engine pushes out 111 hp (metric) and 138 Nm. Naturally, we can expect the 5-speed manual option to be dropped for the Malaysian market.

On the inside, the Chery Tiggo 4 Pro sports an interior that sort of looks like a scaled-down version of the Tiggo 7 Pro’s. The junior Tiggo’s steering wheel and 7-inch digital instrument cluster look highly similar to the ones found in the Tiggo 7 Pro. There is also a 10.25-inch floating infotainment head unit with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay support.

Moving down, you also get an array of piano keys to control the infotainment head unit, along with an electric parking brake switch. The Tiggo 4 Pro comes with a touch panel for AC control rather than the big AC control screen found in the Tiggo 7 Pro. At least the aircon comes with auto dual-zone functions, so it isn’t as “low-spec” as one might think. To make the Tiggo 4 Pro more appealing to the younger crowd, Chery has added some red trimmings too, which fortunately looks subtle and classy enough.

Other interior kits included with the Tiggo 4 Pro consist of a 360-degree camera system, rear aircon vents, leather upholstery, a powered driver’s seat, and a sunroof too. In the safety department, the junior Tiggo is equipped with six airbags, ADAS, and a tyre pressure monitor as standard.

Another budget-oriented model under Chery’s global lineup is the Tiggo 2 Pro. It packs a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated engine that makes 108 hp and 140 Nm, via a CVT gearbox.

Size-wise, the mini Tiggo SUV measures 4,200 mm in length, 1,760 mm in width, and 1,570 mm in height, which makes it larger than the Perodua Ativa and Honda WR-V in all dimensions, except for its height. However, its interior is pretty much basic and lacks modern features like a digital instrument cluster.
