Perodua on Daihatsu safety scandal: company working with Malaysian authorities to assess safety impact

Following the recent “procedural irregularities” disclosure from Daihatsu, which has resulted in a temporary suspension of sales and shipment for several of its cars here in Malaysia and worldwide, Perodua has now released a media statement regarding the issue.

In response to the 174 irregularities pointed out by the third-party investigation committee, Perodua will be carrying out a “detailed assessment on the matter”, and are currently in communication with Malaysian authorities regarding the impact of this development to the safety of its vehicles produced locally at its facilities at Sungai Choh.

“We sincerely apologise to our valued customers and the general public for any alarm this announcement may bring. Our intent is to reach out and assure our valued customers,” the press release reads, adding that the outcome of the discussion with local authorities will be shared with the public in due course.

The recent “procedural irregularities” disclosure released by Toyota and Daihatsu is a follow-up to issues first surfaced during its in-house safety tests in Japan in April this year. The company enlisted third-party investigators, who have pointed out 174 issues with regard to the vehicles’ certification process.

The company reassures its customers that all irregularities have already been tested by third party investigators, and they satisfy the safety standards set by laws and regulations wherever applicable. However, as a response to the ongoing fiasco, Daihatsu has temporarily suspended shipments and sales of its affected vehicles worldwide, including here in Malaysia.
