BMW Malaysia has introduced the all-new generation of the BMW 5 Series in Malaysia with the launch of the fully-electric 2023 BMW i5 eDrive40 M Sport. The electric 5 series is made available in one variant only for now, sold at a price of RM419,800.

The BMW i5 is codenamed the G60E while its ICE and PHEV counterparts are referred to as the G60. The i5/all-new 5 Series is now slightly larger in every single dimension and its looks suggest so too. Design-wise, the i5/all-new 5 Series’ body lines are less dramatic, albeit resulting in a more domineering presence.

Powering the BMW i5 eDrive40 is a single-motor rear-wheel drive (RWD) drivetrain that outputs 340 hp (in Sports mode) and 430 Nm (with Boost mode engaged). This electric drive system results in a 0-100 km/h acceleration time of 6.0 seconds and a limited top speed of 193 km/h.

As for battery and charging, the BMW i5 eDrive40 M Sport houses an 83.9 kWh battery pack that provides up to 582 km of range (WLTP). To charge, the i5 eDrive40 can handle a maximum AC charging rate of 11 kW and a maximum DC charging rate of 205 kW. The former charges the car from 0 to 100% in 8 hours and 15 minutes while the latter charges the car from 10% to 80% in 34 minutes.

Inside, the BMW i5 eDrive40 sports a cabin design like the i7/7 Series. There is an interaction bar that takes centre stage on the dashboard and through it, you could control certain air conditioning functions, hazard lights, as well as the exterior light functions.

Like other modern BMWs, the i5/5 Series features a twin curved display that houses a 12.3-inch display for the instrument cluster and a 14.9-inch head unit. Naturally, the head unit is equipped with the latest BMW Operating System 8.5 and comes with Wireless CarPlay and Android Auto.

In terms of safety, the 2023 BMW i5 eDrive40 M Sport comes with the Driving Assistance Professional package as standard. This includes Distance Control with Stop and Go function and Steering and Lane Control Assistant for optimal driving comfort. Other functions that come as standard include the automatic Speed Limit Assist, route control and active navigation guidance, Side Collision Protection, Road Priority Warning and Wrong-way Warning, and Crossing-traffic Warning with braking function.
