Suzuki Swift Concept debuts with MHEV powertrain, 3 cylinders, CVT

In the middle of all the wild and extreme concept cars on display at Japan Mobility Show 2023 is the Suzuki Swift Concept, which really doesn’t look so much different than the current Suzuki Swift that we have right now. Sure, the looks have changed (and we will address that) and this concept pretty much previews the next generation of this beloved little hatchback.

Let’s talk about its looks first. The headlights now appear to sit lower and the front grille seems to have been shrunken. The new headlight design allows for a clamshell-like bonnet, and the Suzuki emblem sits above the grille instead of inside it. It is a more mature look, especially when combined with the new front bumper design.

The displayed Swift concept sports a dual-tone paint job with a black roof and a blue exterior colour. Around the back, the rear end has been given a butt lift with taillights looking a bit perkier than they used to. The rear end is a bit more angular and overall, it is a more youthful design.

Perhaps the most intriguing part of the rear end of the Swift Concept is the hybrid badge perched on the tailgate. Yes, the Suzuki Swift Concept is a hybrid whose powertrain consists of an inline-3 petrol engine and an electric drive system. It is a mild hybrid so no plugging in is required. Paired with the powertrain is a continuously variable transmission (CVT) and all power is sent to the front wheels only.

Inside, the dashboard has been given a significant revamp with the infotainment system now placed in a floating screen. The air-conditioning controls are no longer the knob type/ the overall dashboard shape has also evolved significantly. Nothing too extreme in terms of the steering wheel design and the instrument cluster.
