Video: BMW iX1 vs Volvo C40 – Which is the better EV compact SUV?

The number of Electric vehicles (EVs) in Malaysia is growing by the day. Just last year alone, more than 2,000 units of EVs were sold, and more than 10 different EV models have been launched so far in 2023. With more Malaysians going electric by the day, more EV charging stations have also been popping up throughout the country, including Gentari’s to meet the people’s needs. Speaking of EVs, we have brought two of the latest EV SUVs – the BMW iX1 and Volvo C40 to present to you Malaysia’s first EV comparison and see who does what better.

First and foremost, let’s get their prices out of the way. The BMW iX1 XDrive30 M Sport costs RM285,800, while the Volvo C40 Recharge costs RM288,888. Both prices are on the road, without insurance. So which of these EV SUVs is the better buy for you? Check out our comparison video below!

The two EV SUVs feature rather different design approaches, both inside and out. The BMW iX1 sports the form of a traditional SUV but looks to be the sportier car of the two. The Volvo C40 might have taken a more minimalistic approach but features a more modern fastback design.

But one thing we have sure realised is to not judge a car’s design by its cover, as sometimes the more understating-looking car can pack more punch when it comes to performance. Speaking of performance, both the BMW iX1 XDrive 30 M Sport and Volvo C40 Recharge are equipped with a dual-motor AWD setup.

The BMW iX1 XDrive30 M Sport packs a total output of 313 hp and 494 Nm, while the Volvo C40 Recharge puts out 408 hp and a whopping 660 Nm. Thanks to a 64.7 kWh battery in the BMW iX1 and a 75 kWh battery in the Volvo C40, their WLTP range is rated at 440 km and 451 km.

So looking at their performance stats, does that mean the Volvo C40 Recharge is the better-performing EV SUV of the two? And does it also drive better than the BMW iX1?
