Chery Omoda 5 EV to be locally assembled in Indonesia starting 2024

The Chery Omoda 5 EV was put on display at the 2023 GIIAS Indonesia autoshow earlier this month, and in just 11 days, the fully electric crossover has recorded over 100 bookings, despite the model still being in concept form with no official pricing available just yet.

Speaking to local publications during the show, Chery International Vice President Shawn Xu also announced that the Omoda 5 EV will be locally assembled as a complete knock-down (CKD) model in Indonesia, with a planned production start date early next year.

The Chery Omoda 5 EV is also scheduled to make its debut in Malaysia next year. Unlike its regular ICE-powered counterpart, however, the fully electric version will not be locally assembled in Kulim, Kedah, instead will be fully imported (CBU) from other markets – likely Indonesia – to take advantage of the Malaysia Government’s current EV incentives.

The concept vehicle mirrors what we’ve already seen on the show car at Auto Shanghai 2023, save for the conversion from left-hand drive to right. Marking itself out as the EV variant, it takes the Omoda 5’s already futuristic design even further, with a new chiselled front fascia, alongside variant-exclusive aero wheels, and a reworked interior.

Based on preliminary specifications announced during its global debut in Shanghai earlier this year, the Chery Omoda 5 EV will be powered by a single 224 hp (165 kW) motor on the front axle, which should translate to a 0-100 km/h sprint in under 7.8 seconds.

The motors are juiced by a 61 kWh battery pack, and thanks to the claimed efficiency of 15 kWh/100 km, Chery also says that the Omoda 5 EV can travel up to 450 km in a full charge. To recharge, it’ll take roughly 35 minutes to fill it up from flat to 80%, although the company did not specify its input power.
