All-electric Acura ZDX debuts – Up to 523km range, 190kW DC charging

Acura has debuted its first electric car, and it takes the name of the revived Acura ZDX. With Acura being a wholly owned company of Honda, it is also the first full-sized electric car by the Japanese carmaker. Upon its world debut, the Acura ZDX is available as the Acura ZDX A-Spec (single- and dual-motor) and the Acura ZDX Type S. Deliveries will begin in 2024.

In case you didn’t know, the Acura ZDX was first introduced in 2009 and it was an SUV with a sportback body style. After vanishing from the market in 2013, the Acura ZDX has now been revived, albeit as a fully-electric vehicle (EV). The ZDX is a large SUV, measuring 5,022 mm long, 1,955 mm wide, and 1,635 mm tall, with a 3,093 mm long wheelbase. For comparison, the Honda CR-V’s overall length and wheelbase are about 400 mm shorter.

Exterior design details on the ZDX include the evolution of Acura’s signature front fascia, with the brand’s iconic Chicane DRLs, Jewel Eyeâ„¢ LED headlights, and seamless Diamond Pentagon with 3D-embossed diamond pattern and illuminated surround. The ZDX sports a dual-tone colour scheme and its charging port is located on the left front fender.

The A-Spec sits on 20-inch wheels while the Type S sits on 22-inch wheels. Interestingly, the Type S gets an air suspension system while the standard A-spec gets a fixed coil suspension system.

Performance-wise, the Acura ZDX A-Spec is driven by a single electric motor that makes an estimated 340 hp and drives the rear wheels. The A-Spec is also available with a dual-motor setup, but its performance numbers have not been specified. The ZDX Type S, on the other hand, is exclusively available with a dual-motor all-wheel drive (AWD) setup that makes an estimated 500 hp.

As for battery and range, all variants of the ZDX get a 102-kWh capacity battery pack and this provides 523 km of range (EPA) for the single-motor A-Spec, 507 km of range (EPA) for the dual-motor A-Spec, and 463 km (EPA) for the Type S. To charge, the Acura ZDX can handle a maximum DC charging rate of 190 kW and this helps the car regain 130 km of range in just 10 minutes (RWD A-Spec).

Inside the ZDX, the driver-oriented cockpit features things like Acura’s first integration of Google built-in for seamless on-the-go connectivity. Standard across the ZDX lineup are apps like Google Assistant, Google Maps, and Google Play. Screens in the ZDX include an 11.3-inch head unit and an 11-inch digital instrument cluster. Complementing the screens in the ZDX is a Bang & Olufsen sound system.

The revived Acura ZDX is Acura’s first fully electric car and perhaps Honda’s first full-sized electric car. Honda’s current electric car offerings include the Honda e and Honda e:Ny1. Honda has also announced its plans for its China-exclusive EVs which have been previewed through the e:N2 Concept.
