BYD hits 5 million EV production milestone, sold across 54 countries



New Energy Vehicle (NEV) battery company BYD has announced that is has its 5 millionth NEV milestone just recently, after taking a bit over 15 years to reach it. The milestone extends beyond the company itself as BYD is the first company in the world to achieve it.

The journey to the 5 million milestone took about 15 years. With the first 13 years spent to reach 1 million, another 18 months to reach 3 million, and another 9 months hit the 5 million milestone. The company’s NEVs include fully electric vehicle (EVs) and Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs).

BYD Chairman and President, Wang Chuanfu said, “Today marks a historic moment for BYD as we witness our 5 millionth new energy vehicle roll off the production line. On this special occasion, we would like to extend our sincere gratitude to our customers across the globe for their trust in our products, our partners in the industry for this journey shared together, and every one of our employees whose hard work and dedication have made this landmark possible.”

BYD’s NEVs are sold across 54 countries with the Atto 3 being the most popular model. In Thailand, Israel, and Singapore, the company leads the NEV sales chart. Recently, the company announced its plans for three new factories in Brazil.

Besides private vehicles, BYD also produces NEV buses and taxis. Its electric public transport solutions are operational in over 400 cities across more than 70 countries.

In Malaysia, BYD NEVs sold include the Atto 3 and the Dolphin. The former is an EV SUV while the latter is an EV hatchback. Both are available with “Standard Range” and “Extended Range” variants. The BYD brand was launched in Malaysia in late 2022 and is officially distributed by Sime Darby Motors.
