At long last, the poster child for EVs has now made it into Malaysia with the launch of the Tesla Model Y today. The fully-electric compact SUV will be offered here in three variants – Model Y RWD, Model Y Long Range Dual Motor AWD, and Model Y Performance Dual Motor AWD, with prices starting from RM199,000.
The Tesla Model Y is now available to order on Tesla’s official online configurator (linked here), with first deliveries slated to begin in early 2024.

Tesla Model Y exterior design, equipment for Malaysia
Essentially a crossover version of the Model 3, the Tesla Model Y also sports the sedan’s minimalist design language, but with a taller roof, reworked rear hatch, and larger wheels. The Tesla Model Y measures 4,751 mm in length (2,890 mm wheelbase), 1,921 mm in width, and 1,624 mm tall, putting it in about the same ballpark as the BMW iX3 and Mercedes-Benz EQC.
Exterior equipment highlights on the Tesla Model Y include:
- LED headlights
- LED tail lights
- Keyless entry with access card and smartphone entry
- 19-inch Gemini wheels (21-inch Uberturbine wheels for the Performance Dual Motor AWD variant)
- Pearl White exterior colour
The Tesla Model Y is also offered with several options, including:
- 20-inch Induction wheels – RM10,000
- Solid Black, Midnight Silver Metallic, Deep Blue Metallic exterior colour – RM5,000

Tesla Model Y performance, electric range
The Tesla Model Y is powered by either a single- or dual- motor set-up, depending on variant. All three variants of the Model Y utilise a 400V electrical architecture, though Tesla does not advertise their actual battery capacities, instead opting to differentiate them via their driving range.

The Long Range Dual Motor AWD variant is also offered with an Acceleration Boost feature (paid option, activated via Tesla Mobile app), which reduces the century sprint time to just 4.5 seconds.
Befitting its sporting credentials, the range-topping Performance Dual Motor AWD also comes equipped with a Performance Brake system, lowered suspensions, a carbon fibre rear spoiler, and aluminium pedals on the interior.
Tesla Model Y interior
Tesla’s signature minimalist design language, with the simplistic dashboard only interrupted by the single 15-inch touchscreen display in the centre, that serves as both the infotainment system and instrumentation display for the driver.
While the Tesla Model Y is offered globally in both five- and seven-seater configurations, the SUV will only be available in a five-seater layout here in Malaysia. Standard interior equipment across all variants of the Tesla Model Y here in Malaysia include:

Tesla Model Y Autopilot, Full Self Driving available in Malaysia
All three variants of the Tesla Model Y will come as standard with the basic Autopilot advanced driver assistance suite, which includes autonomous emergency braking, blind spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, and lane centring assist.
An Enhanced Autopilot option (RM16,000 extra) is also available, and adds an automatic lane change system, a ‘Navigate on Autopilot’ feature that automatically moves your car into the right lane for highway exits, an automatic overtaking function, automatic parking assistance, and a Smart Summon system that can drive the car autonomously through a car park.
Customers can also opt for the “Full Self-Driving” (FSD) package at RM32,000, which currently consists of all the features in Autopilot and Enhanced Autopilot, with ‘Traffic Light and Stop Sign Control’ and ‘Autosteer on city streets’ listed as “upcoming” on the company’s website. The system can also be updated in the future via automatic software updates.
Despite its name, however, the driver assistance suite (which is currently still in beta testing) is not truly an autonomous driving system just yet.

The 2023 Tesla Model Y is offered in three variants in Malaysia, priced as follows (on-the-road, without insurance, before options):
- Tesla Model Y RWD – RM199,000
- Tesla Model Y Long Range AWD – RM246,000
- Tesla Model Y Performance AWD – RM288,000
Included in the price is a four-year/80,000 km Basic Vehicle Warranty, as well as an eight-year/160,000 km Battery & Drive Unit Warranty.
