Subaru EyeSight now available for manual transmission, to debut on the BRZ this fall

Subaru has announced that it is developing its EyeSight advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) for its manual transmission (MT) vehicles. The new EyeSight system will first be introduced on the Japanese-spec manual Subaru BRZ sports cars, which will be debuting in Japan this fall.

The newly developed EyeSight suite for Subaru MT vehicles is based on the existing system already in use on the automatic variants, and as such it mirrors most of the functionalities of the latter, including pre-collision braking (PCB), adaptive cruise control (ACC), lane departure and sway warning (LDW), lead vehicle start alert, and rear sonar warning.

The new features will join the existing blind spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert on the manual Subaru BRZ.

Unlike many other ADAS suites on the market today, Subaru’s EyeSight system uses only a stereo camera set-up to provide driver assistance functionalities.

In addition to giving its customers extra peace of mind while driving, Subaru says that the new EyeSight system is also now “combined with control tailored to the driving and operating characteristics of MT vehicles”, allowing the system to operate in a wide range of real-world situations while not discounting on driving enjoyment.

Closer to home, the EyeSight system is available on all of Subaru’s new vehicles. This includes the Subaru BRZ, Subaru XV, Subaru Forester, Subaru Outback, Subaru WRX sedan, as well as the Subaru WRX wagon.

According to Subaru data, the Japanese carmaker has delivered more than 5.5 million cars equipped with the EyeSight system globally since its debut in 2008. Subaru aims to achieve zero fatal road accidents by 2030.
