Tesla Model S Plaid reclaims Nürburgring EV lap record, but apparently not for long

The Tesla Model S Plaid has just beaten the Porsche Taycan Turbo S again to reclaim the production EV lap record at the Nürburgring Nordschleife.

According to the official list on Nürburgring’s own website, the Tesla Model S Plaid – equipped with the new Track Package option – completed the 20.832 km loop in 7 minutes and 25.231 seconds. The new time beats the previous record held by the Porsche Taycan Turbo S by over eight seconds.

The new time also improved upon its old record by nearly 10 seconds, courtesy of the new Track Package that promises the “ultimate track experience” courtesy of its mechanical upgrades.

These include the new 20-inch lightweight forged aluminium wheels wrapped in sticky ‘track-ready’ Goodyear Supercar 3R tyres, as well as upgraded brakes consisting of new carbon-silicon carbide brake rotors, high-performance brake fluid, plus new six-piston front and four-piston rear brake calipers with “high-performance” brake pads.

In addition to actual mechanical upgrades, the Track Package also tweaks the car’s software to unlock a new 322 km/h (200 mph) top speed. The record-breaking car also features a round steering wheel, in place of the steering joke yoke.

Tesla and Porsche have been busy duking it out at Nürburgring recently, with the production EV title already changing hands between them multiple times over the last few years – and it’s set to happen again very, very soon.

Despite having only set the record last Friday, the Tesla Model S Plaid’s new lap time has already reportedly been beaten by the German marque, according to an Instagram post by YouTuber and Nürburgring expert, Misha Charoudin.

“Anyway, whatever it is, this Plaid’s record is already broken anyway. I can only guess that announcement will follow on 75th birthday of someone/something or anytime soon,” Charoudin said at the end of a post commenting on the Model S’ latest lap record.

The “75th birthday of someone/something” obviously refers to Porsche, which is set to celebrate its 75th anniversary this year, at an event later today (8 June). If Charoudin’s comments hold any water, then Tesla’s latest lap record will only be held for a couple of days.

Porsche has been photographed recently at the Nürburgring testing what appears to be a higher-performance version of the Taycan, with improved aerodynamics and reportedly over 1,000 hp of output. The German carmaker could be using the event today to stage its debut.
