Smart #3 could enter Malaysian market, fastback EV debuts at Auto Shanghai 2023

The Smart #3 has just made its world debut at Auto Shanghai 2023 and present at its world premiere were Proton CEO, Dr. Li Chunrong, and Proton Deputy CEO, Roslan Abdullah. In a Facebook post by Proton Cars, it is stated that the Smart #3 fastback electric vehicle (EV) “may be added to the model lineup in Malaysia”.

For those who don’t know yet, the Smart #3 is essentially a fastback version of the Smart #1. For Malaysia, Pro-Net, which is Proton’s new energy vehicle subsidiary, will be the official distributor Smart cars. The first Smart Car that will make its debut in Malaysia is the Smart #1 in the fourth quarter (Q4) of 2023.

Currently on display at Auto Shanghai 2023, the Smart #3 has a maximum power output of 315 kW (428 hp metric) and 543 Nm. The Smart # 3 can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.6 seconds. At the core of the Smart #3’s drivetrain is a dual-motor all-wheel drive (AWD) system which comes as standard. The car runs a Macpherson strut suspension setup at the front and a five multi-ink setup at the back.

Full specifications of the Smart # have yet to be revealed. However, if specifications of the Smart #1 are anything to go by, the Smart #3 could house the same 66-kWh battery. It could provide more range than the Smart #1’s 440-km (WLTP) figure, as the Smart #3 is reportedly more aerodynamic than its SUV counterpart.

For charging, the Smart #1 supports regular AC power of up to 22 kW, which can fill the battery from 10% to 80% in under three hours. DC fast charging is also supported at speeds of up to 150 kW, taking less than 30 minutes for the same amount of charge. Again, if the Smart #1’s specifications are something to go by, the Smart #3 should somewhat be similar.
