Video: Ferrari Purosangue 6.5L V12, Maranello’s first not-an-SUV

Go back a few years, and a high-riding four-dour car is not something you’d expect from Ferrari. “Not an SUV” according to Ferrari, the Ferrari Purosangue has made its debut in the Southern hemisphere during the Universo Ferrari event in Sydney. Not one to resist an opportunity to see a the best of Maranello up close, our very own GC Mah flew to Sydney to have a closer look at the Purosangue.

Ferrari has placed a 6.5-litre naturally aspirated V12 engine under the hood of the Purosangue. The engine makes 725 hp and 716 Nm and is paires with an eight-speed oil-bath F1 dual-clutch transmission (DCT). There’s also a four-wheel drive system and the entire powertrain launches this big Ferrari from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.3 seconds, onward to a top speed of 310 km/h.

The look of this high-riding four-seater by Ferrari divides opinions. Some may find it sacrilegious to the brand, while some may find this as an elegant solution to the “SUV invasion” of high performance manufacturers. If you need some reference as to how big the Purosangue is, its is slightly smaller than the Lamborghini Urus.

The Purosangue measures 4,973 mm long, 2,028 mm wide, and 1,589 mm tall. The Urus measures 5,112 mm long, 2,016 mm wide, and 1,638 mm tall. Despite its large dimensions, the Purosangue still manages to look sleek and undeniably Ferrari.

Inside, the Purosangue’s cabin has been designed to reflect a “sporty lounge” with the main theme being symmetry. Both the driver and front passenger get a binnacle, both having their own sets of displays. Going against convention, there is no large central touchscreen in the Purosangue. There’s also no built in navigation as the Purosangue relies on Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity for such functions.

The second row seats are accessed via ‘suicide’ doors and there are only two seats in the second row. The boot provides 487 litres space, making the Purosangue the most practical Ferrari ever made.
