Volvo C40 Recharge: Possibly the most creative and practical storage space ever

On first impression, one wouldn’t expect much practicality from the Volvo C40 Recharge Pure Electric due its size alone. Already based on the small XC40 SUV, its cabin is even smaller due to its sloping roof design. But believe it or not, the Volvo C40 Recharge is a perfect example of how storage space should be designed in a car.

And one look in the boot is all it takes to show you how much the C40 prioritizes practicality. Firstly, one-half of the boot floor can be folded up, and already you can see that there is additional space underneath the boot floor for the charging cable and any other loose items you may have.

The one-half of the boot floor also becomes a partition when folded up so if your boot isn’t filled to the brim, your items won’t go flying around in the trunk. It’s something many of us may overlook, but not hearing loud thuds and rolls in the trunk while you’re driving contributes to a more peaceful driving experience.

There are also hooks on that folded-up partition for shopping bags and these don’t exactly take the entire weight of your bags, but they do help to keep them in place. The total boot space in the C40 is over 400 litres despite having a sloped roofline.

The shopping bag hooks may not be able to take much weight, but they do help to keep things in place.

And if that boot wasn’t enough storage space for you, the C40 (unlike some EVs) actually has a frunk. It provides 31 litres of storage space, and it is also where the tyre repair kit is placed.

Practical storage space can also be seen inside the cabin with the biggest one being the front door bins. With one large opening, the front door bins can fit an entire laptop (with some other small loose items as well), making it perfect for young urban professionals. There’s also a clever hook that folds out from the glovebox which can hold up to 2kg of load.

The best storage feature in the C40 would be the removable dustbin that is nestled in the centre console. If you’re one to appreciate a tidy cabin, you would find this extremely useful as you no longer have to deal with having rubbish left in the door bins and other cubby spaces.

The C40 may be small, but the clever compartments do make it feel like a bigger car in terms of practicality. What other cars can you think of that provide equally or more organized storage space?
