Chery sold over 1.1 million cars so far in 2022, over 50k monthly exports



With one month left to end the year, Chinese automobile company, Chery has sold 1,127,289 cars globally, showing a 32.6% year-on-year growth from 2021. The company reports that it has increased its export volume by 70.9%, with the past four months exceeding 50,000 units exported per month.

In November 2022 alone, Chery sold 100,531 cars globally, being the sixth consecutive month where global monthly sales exceed 100,000 units. Chery attributes its success to the 7-seater Chery Tiggo 8 Pro which is a popular choice for a reception vehicle for state guests in Brazil. Globally, 171,000 units of the Chery Tiggo 8 Pro have been sold so far in 2022.

Chery’s Tiggo SUV series

Following behind the Tiggo 8 Pro is the Tiggo 7 Pro with 146,000 units sold so far in 2022. Chery states that the Tiggo 7 Pro ranks first in its segment in Qatar and other Middle Eastern countries.

To date, Chery has over 11.13 million users worldwide with 2.35 million of them being outside of China. The company plans to build its brand image in more parts of the world.

In Malaysia, the Chery car brand has returned and it previewed 5 of its SUVs in Malaysia back in October 2022. The five models are the ‘regular’ Chery Tiggo 8 Pro, Tiggo 8 Pro PHEV, Tiggo 7 Pro, Tiggo 4 Pro, and Omoda 5.

Chery’s first-ever global model is the Omoda 5. For Malaysia, it will be offered in two powertrain configurations – a 1.5-litre turbocharged engine paired to a CVT gearbox, making 154 hp and 230 Nm, and a 1.6-litre turbocharged mill paired to a seven-speed DCT gearbox, making 194 hp and 290 Nm.

Chery Omoda 5 previewed in Malaysia

The Tiggo 8 Pro is powered by a 1.6-litre TGDI engine that makes 197 hp and 290 Nm. Paired with the engine is a Chery-developed 7-speed dual-clutch transmission. The Tiggo 7 Pro is either powered by the same 1.6-litre engine as the Tiggo 8 Pro, or a 1.5-litre turbocharged engine that makes 156 hp and 230 Nm.

Chery plans to launch some of its models in Malaysia in 2023, and also has plans to locally assemble its cars in Malaysia with a 30,000-unit yearly capacity. Chery already has a plant in Indonesia, and both the Malaysian and Indonesian plants will produce right-hand drive (RHD) cars to be exported to countries like exported to Australia, Singapore, and Brunei.
