BMW introduces first-ever X models made in China – X5 xDrive30Li & X5 xDrive40Li

BMW has pledged its long-term involvement in China with the first-ever BMW X5 produced exclusively for the China market. Built at the BMW Brilliance Automotive plant in Shenyang, two variants will be available – the X5 xDrive30Li and the X5 xDrive40Li.

Previously, the sole manufacturing plant for the X5 was in South Carolina, USA, the largest facility in BMW Group’s production network. BMW said the move will also allow the plant in the US to meet the high demand for X models in the US and around the world.

The wheelbase of the two BMW X5 variants has been extended by 130 mm, to 3105 mm, to free up more legroom for second-row passengers. Not only that, but rear passengers will also be able to get in and out a lot easier due to the longer rear doors. The overall length of the X5 has also increased by 138 mm to 5060 mm.

Living up to its “Made in China, for China” moto, the BMW X5’s standard specification has been tailored specifically for Chinese customers. They come with specially-designed comfort seats, extra four degrees of rear seat recline, a panoramic glass sunroof, along with a bespoke M Aerodynamics exterior package.

Standard equipment includes the BMW Laser headlamps, electronically-controlled suspension, and a Harman Kardon sound system. A newly-designed smartphone tray on the centre console also offers wireless charging.

The xDrive30Li is powered by a 2.0-litre 4-cylinder turbocharged engine while the xDrive40Li gets a more powerful 3.0-litre straight-six turbo engine. Both are paired to 8-speed automatic transmissions to drive all four wheels.
