Video: 2022 Volkswagen Golf R Mk8 now in Malaysia, from RM356k – 5 Things

Well well well, this was a huge surprise – but certainly a pleasant one. Because in addition to the previously-previewed all-new eighth-generation Golf R-Line and Golf GTI, Volkswagen Passenger Car Malaysia also officially unveiled the all-new range-topping Golf R hot hatch during the launch event in Sepang, completing the Golf line-up here in Malaysia.

Being the range-topping performance model, the all-new Volkswagen Golf R stands out from the other two variants with its model-exclusive exterior body kit that includes a more aggressive-looking front bumper, as well as a more prominent diffuser round the back.

As usual, the R also gets the signature satin-silver wing mirror covers, larger 19-inch ‘Adelaide’ alloy wheels, and blue-coloured R-styled brake calipers. Round the back, there’s also a set of real quad exhaust tailpipes, though unfortunately we don’t get the fancier Akrapovic system here in Malaysia.

But of course, the Golf R is all about performance, and this one here is no different. Underneath the bonnet is a revamped EA888 2.0-litre turbocharged TSI engine, now making 320 hp and 400 Nm of torque. And unlike the two other variants, the Golf R here also gets all-wheel drive (with the new R Performance Torque vectoring system), with power delivered via a seven-speed DSG dual-clutch gearbox.

In terms of performance figures, the all-new Volkswagen Golf R completes the century sprint in 4.6 seconds, onward to a top speed of 250 km/h.

Unfortunately, unlike the two other Golf models here in Malaysia, the all-new Volkswagen Golf R will not be locally-assembled here in Pekan, and thus means it’ll carry a higher price tag – RM356,412.85 on-the-road, without insurance, and inclusive of the 50% SST exemptions for CBU cars.

Included in the price as standard is a five-year unlimited mileage warranty with every purchase, alongside a three-year free scheduled service programme and five years of free roadside assistance.
