Video: BMW iX xDrive40 fully-electric EV SUV in Malaysia, 5 Things

The BMW iX was launched in Malaysia back in August last year. But due to Covid-19 pandemic struggles and the limited numbers of the cars (being fully imported from Germany), we only got the chance to check out the fully-electric SUV in more detail recently – but better late than never, right?

The all-new iX is currently offered only in the xDrive40 guise, although BMW Malaysia says that the xDrive50 variant will also be available at a later date. It’s powered by BMW’s fifth-generation eDrive powertrain, consisting of two electric motors and a 76.6 kWh battery.

Total power output is rated at 326 hp and 630 Nm of torque, which translates to a 0-100 km/h time of 6.1 seconds, onward to a top speed of 200 km/h. The battery provides a driving range of 425 km, and takes approximately seven hours to recharge via the on-board 11 kW charger. DC fast-charging is also supported at up to 150 kW.

As for standard equipment, the BMW iX xDrive40 in Malaysia comes with 21-inch aerodynamic wheels, fully-LED headlamps with High Beam Assistant, four-zone automatic climate control, the BMW iDrive 8 curved instrument cluster and infotainment panel, alongside advanced driver assistance features such as Lane Departure and Lane Change Warning, autonomous emergency braking (front and rear), rear cross-traffic alert, as well as the Reverse and Park Assistant.

Buyers can also opt for the Sport Package, which adds a Sport Line Kit exterior package, 22-inch wheels, BMW LaserLight headlights, panoramic roof, 18-inch Harman Kardon sound system, real wood and crystal cabin trims, a 360-degree surround view camera, as well as Lane and Steering Control Assistant.

With the recently-announced EV tax-free initiative as part of the Malaysia government’s Budget 2022, the all-new BMW iX xDrive40 now starts at RM361,430, on-the-road, without insurance, and inclusive of the standard two-year factory warranty and eight-year/160,000 km battery warranty.

If you opt for the Sport Package, that’ll be another RM46,000 on top of that, bringing the price up to RM407,430 (a whopping RM65,200 cheaper than before!). There’s also an extended warranty package (five years unlimited mileage) with free scheduled service programme (five-year/120,000 km) for the BMW iX, which brings the prices up to RM379,800 and RM425,800 respectively.
