This year, Porsche Design, the firm founded by the designer of the iconic 911 sports car, celebrates its 50th anniversary. A special milestone deserves a very special car and thus curation of the 2022 Porsche 911 Edition 50 Years Porsche Design.
Based on the 911 Targa 4 GTS, the new model is limited to 750 units globally and features special aesthetic elements inspired by the first product Ferdinand Alexander (F.A.) Porsche’s new company designed: the Chronograph 1 watch.
All 750 units of the commemorative 911 Targa 4 GTS will be finished in luscious black as an acknowledgement of the Porsche Design Chronograph 1. Additionally, several sections of the exterior such as the 20/21-inch centre-looking Turbo S wheels, decals and the signature Targa bar are finished in Satin Platinum.
The grille on the engine cover meanwhile adds a large “50 Years Porsche Design” badge. As for the power unit, the 911 Targa 4 GTS is equipped with a twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre six-cylinder flat engine with outputs of 480 hp and 570 Nm. Collectors can choose either a standard 8-speed PDK transmission or a seven-speed manual.
Key performance features include the Sport Chrono Package, sports exhaust system, Porsche Traction Management (PTM) all-wheel drive system and corresponding differential that is paired with the transmission. Standstill to 100 km/h takes just 3.5 seconds.
Inside, the Porsche 911 Edition 50 Years Porsche Design adds Sport-Tex seats with a checked pattern and a centre marker on the GT Sport steering wheel. The limited-edition markers meanwhile are the headrests embossed with the 50 Years logo, the centre console lid with the signature of F.A. Porsche as well as the serial number badge.
Porsche Classic has also restored a 911 S 2.4 Targa from 1972 – the year that Porsche Design was founded by both F.A. Porsche and his brother Hans-Peter Porsche. Over the past 50 years, the studio has evolved into the exclusive Porsche Design lifestyle brand and it now showcases the legacy and philosophy of F.A. Porsche in a variety of product categories.
In the USA, where Porsche is the second biggest market after China, the Porsche 911 Edition 50 Years Porsche Design and the Chronograph 1 watch are sold together for close to USD197,000 (approx. RM825k).
Locally in Malaysia, Sime Darby Auto Performance announced the availability of the retro-inspired Porsche 911 Targa 4S Heritage Design Edition from last August.
Apart from the vehicle and chronograph watches, Porsche is also having special exhibits at the Porsche Museum to celebrate this golden jubilee. Part of it will feature information on the life of F.A. Porsche as well as cars such as the 993 Speedster and the 904 that he described as his masterpiece.
