Volkswagen has launched ID.3 electric car in China

Despite a slow start for the Volkswagen ID.4 electric crossover in China, where it was reportedly losing out to the likes of Tesla and Nio, Volkswagen is staying positive and relentless with its electric charge in China (pun intended). The company has introduced the ID.3 at the Chengdu Motor Show today.

“Volkswagen’s global electrification offensive is rapidly gaining further momentum. After the ID.4 and the ID.6, we are now launching the ID.3 as the third all-electric model series in China within a mere six months,” said Volkswagen CEO, Ralf Brandstatter.

Earmarked for launch in China by October, the ID.3 will be available in China from Q4 of this year but it hasn’t been easy for Volkswagen. The ID.3 is Volkswagen’s best-seller in several European countries. It’s the first car from the ID. family and when it firs debuted at the Frankfurt Motor Show, it collected over 30,000 orders.

The company reportedly only sold 1,200 units of the 1D.4 and a total of 1,500 electric Volkswagens in May. The rest were made up of the ID.6 SUV.

Things have picked up recently, with Volkswagen claiming that the numbers have doubled in the last three months. They sold 3,000 units in June and 5,800 units of ID. electric vehicles.

The strong sales momentum placed Volkswagen firmly in the Top 10 by July. According to the company, between 80,000 to 100,000 vehicles from the ID. family will be delivered to customers in China.

By 2030, Volkswagen intends to increase electric vehicle deliveries in Europe to over 70%. In the USA and China, the brand is targeting an EV share of over 50%.

The ID.3 is powered by an electric motor, with 201 hp and 310 Nm, to drive the rear wheels. It’s available with three different battery capacities, with the highest 77 kWh battery offering up to 550 km of electric driving range.
