While its chief rivals are busy ripping up the Nurburgring with record lap after record lap to show, BMW, for some reason, has been rather shy – despite having just launched the all-new BMW M3 and M4 last year.
But there’s no need to worry, because the guys at Sport Auto has got their hands on a BMW M4 Competition, and in their usual Supertest protocol, put it through its paces at the Nurburgring Nordschleife for all of us to watch.
So how long does it take for the BMW M4 Competition to lap the Nurburgring? According to Sport Auto, it’s 7:30.49, with a completely bone-stock vehicle, rolling on Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres.
That’s not a record-breaking lap by any stretches of imagination, but it’s still an impressive lap nonetheless – especially when considering that it’s not an official attempt by a carmaker, thus there weren’t any specific optimisations (specific tyre pressure for each corner, waiting for the perfect time of day etc.) to try and paint the car in the best light possible.
Just watch the video and you’ll notice how much the tyres were struggling through the corners!

The car here was also the “normal” rear-wheel drive one, and not the xDrive AWD model (which BMW did test and develop on the Nurburgring, but no official record attempt as of now), which should help improve the M4’s lap times. Still, with what they had on hand, Auto Sport test driver Christian Gebhardt did put on an incredible performance.
To put the time into perspective, the German publication also recently tested the heavier (but much more powerful) BMW M5 CS, lapping the ‘Ring in 7:29.57. The BMW M8 Competition, meanwhile, recorded a time of 7:32.79.
As a quick recap, the all-new BMW M4 Competition packs a 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged inline-six engine underneath its bonnet, with outputs rated at 510 hp and 650 Nm of torque. In the competition form, the engine is paired exclusively to an eight-speed automatic transmission, which translates to a 0-100 km/h time of 3.9 seconds.
