BMW Japan’s new 8 Series Frozen Black Edition is unnecessarily dark

Colours are always subjective and can alter the aesthetics of a subject, hence, in focus group studies and surveys on cars, all vehicles are presented in either white or silver. Even in black cars, certain metallic elements usually appear in bright chrome just to create a break or highlight.

For BMW Japan, they have decided to introduce the BMW 8 Series Frozen Black Edition. Everything single possible item on the exterior is black; starting off with the matte black paint called BMW Individual Frozen Black.

All chrome trim inserts get the black treatment too, such as the entire kidney grille, window surround, dual exhaust tips and fender vents. 20-inch M Y-spoke style 728 M in Jet Black wheels accompany the Frozen Black bodywork, together with black painted BMW M sport brake calipers.

Both the BMW 840i Coupe and Gran Coupe are available with the Frozen Black package, but the latter gets an additional panoramic moonroof.

Inside, BMW Individual headlining in Anthracite Alcantara is applied together with extended Merino leather across every surface of the dashboard and door panels. Even the BMW M emblems in the sport seats are in gloss black!

Dark as it may be in there, subtle lighting for the all-black interior comes from an unlikely source – the 16 stainless steel covered partially-lit speakers from Bowers & Wilkins.

This BMW M850i xDrive Coupe is made of materials from out of this world. Find out more here!

The Bowers & Wilkins Diamond Surround Sound System is one of the highest specifications in-car entertainment system by BMW. It features a 16-channel amplifier with 1,400 watts of power to deliver a beautifully-precise and multifaceted acoustic experience where its quality can be enjoyed from all seats in the BMW 8 Series in equal measure.

The BMW 840i is powered by a 3.0-litre straight-six turbocharged engine delivering 340 hp and 500 Nm of torque. Drive is to the rear wheels via an 8-speed Steptronic automatic gearbox. Benchmark century dash is completed in 5.2 seconds.

Sales will be exclusive on the local BMW online store with only just five units of the BMW 840i Coupe available and 15 units of the BMW 840i Grand Coupe, each priced at 15 million yen (RM 585,000).

BMW Japan also introduced a rather catchy name for a limited-edition BMW X5 called the Pleasure3 edition. Find out what pleasures it brings to owners here.

BMW Malaysia meanwhile offers the 840i Gran Coupe from RM910,961.23 while the coupe is only available from the M850i xDrive priced from RM1,062,350.
