It’s hard not to stop and stare at the new Mercedes-AMG GT R

The new Mercedes-AMG GT R, alongside the AMG GT C, has roared its way to Malaysia, priced at RM1.7 million on-the-road before insurance.

Having spent most of its development time on the Nürburgring Nordschleife, known as the world’s toughest race track or the Green Hell, the AMG GT R is nicknamed “Beast of the Green Hell” with a lap time of just 7:10.9 minutes.

The raw appearance of the GT R goes beyond aesthetic appeal – two aerodynamically-shaped horizontal fins help ensure maximum air flow to the radiator for the best cooling performance. Cooling performance is also enhanced with special cooling air slits by the wheel arch liners, and an AIRPANEL active air management system,

At a speed of 80 km/h in RACE mode, the carbon component that weighs only about two kilograms that is sealed almost invisibly in the underbody in front of the engine moves downward by about 40 millimetres and changes the airflow.

The GT R also comes with a carbon fibre roof, 20-inch wheels and 6-pot caliper brakes with carbon ceramic discs.

The carbon-fibre roof, yellow-painted brake callipers and prominent fixed wing accentuates the racing DNA of the AMG GT R. The side view additionally benefits from the AMG 5-twin-spoke forged wheels and the AMG cross-spoke forged wheels for the AMG GT R and GT C, respectively.

On to the mechanical bits, the GT R’s wishbones steering knuckles and hub carriers on the front and rear axle are manufactured entirely out of forged aluminium to reduce unsprung mass.

It also adopts uniball spherical bearings on the lower wishbones at the rear axle in place of conventional wishbone bushings for reduced play, contributing to better driving precision.

Inside, the GT R is as dramatic as its exterior with the AMG Track Package. This includes a steel roll cage, AMG full bucket seats and a fire extinguisher.

Also available in the Mercedes-AMG GT R is AMG TRACK PACE – a system that transform COMAND and a smartphone into a personal race engineer.

The AMG DYNAMIC SELECT allows an adjustment of the vehicle’s characteristics in the AMG GT by turning a switch. It works even faster than a racing team according to Mercedes-Benz – adjusting parameters for the engine, transmission, suspension and steering. Depending on the selected drive program, the vehicle either becomes more comfortable or ready for the racetrack.
