It seems that BMW Malaysia is not letting Mercedes-Benz Malaysia (MBM) taking all the limelight in the high-performance crossover segment with the official debut of the BMW X2 M35i xDrive. It is also the first ever M Performance vehicle to be launched in the Malaysian market.
Yes, we know it’s not a direct competitor to the Mercedes-AMG GLA 45 4MATIC but it’s not a case of David vs Goliath either. The Beemer still packs a potent 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol with 306 hp and 450 Nm of torque – 69 hp and 25 Nm down from the AMG.

Paired to a ZF-sourced 8-speed automatic and xDrive all-wheel-drive system, the X2 M35i takes the century sprint in 4.9 seconds with a limited top speed of 250 km/h. If you look at it this way, the X2 is only half a second off from the GLA 45. Other performance-enhancing bits include the M Sport adaptive suspension with two settings – Comfort and Sport as well as the M Sport front differentials.
The M35i distinguishes itself from a regular sDrive20i through the sharp M Sport Aero Kit, larger M Sport brakes with blue callipers, 20-inch M light alloy wheels Double-spoke style 721 M wrapped in 225/40 profile run flat rubbers, Cerium Grey finish for the air inlets, exterior mirror caps and the all important M35i emblem at the rear.
Inside, apart from the Red Dakota leather upholstery, M Sport Seats and seat belts, it would be hard to tell this apart from a regular X2. Other amenities include M leather wrapped multifunctional steering wheel with paddle shifters, Heads Up Display, reverse camera, LCD instrument cluster, 8.8-inch touchscreen infotainment system and 12-speaker Harman Kardon surround sound system.
