Updated Mazda MX-5 goes on sale in UK, more power & updated tech

Mazda UK has just officially launched the updated Mazda MX-5 (convertible and RF) for their local market. The new open-top sportscar gets the uprated 2.0-litre SKyActiv-G engine, upgraded i-ActivSense safety tech and a more refined cabin.

At the forefront of this update is the reworked 2.0-litre naturally four-cylinder SkyActiv-G petrol engine with lighter pistons and con-rod, revised camshaft, exhaust valves, fuel injectors, throttle valve and air intake. The result 24 hp and 5 Nm gain in power to 184 hp and 205 Nm of torque as well as a higher redline of 7,500 rpm (previously 6,800 rpm).

As for the smaller 1.5-litre SKYACTIV-G engine, it benefits from improved combustion and reduced internal friction that nets it a power increase of 132 hp and 152 Nm of torque.

The more powerful 2.0-litre MX-5 convertible now completes the century sprint in 6.5 seconds, 0.8 seconds quicker than before while the RF version accelerates 0.6 seconds quicker with the six-speed manual box and 0.5 seconds quicker for the six-speed automatic variant. Mazda has also retuned the exhaust silencer to allow the exhaust note to sing a cleaner and more powerful tune.

The enhanced performance did not sacrifice efficiency as well, with the new engines being compliant to the stringent Euro 6d Temp emission regulations thanks to more efficient combustion, i-ELOOP and i-stop kinetic recovery and stop-start technology.

On the safety front, UK-bound MX-5 will come equipped with Front Smart City Brake Support, Lane Departure Warning System, Rear Smart City Brake Support, Traffic Sign Recognition and Driver Attention Alert amongst others.
