The recently unveiled third-generation Volkswagen Touareg has just gone on sale in the UK with only one powertrain option available, the 3.0-litre V6 TDI turbodiesel.

Positioned as the brand’s flagship SUV, the Touareg is available with two exterior trims – standard and R-Line, the latter gives the five-seater SUV a sportier flair. Sitting on Volkswagen Group’s modular longitudinal matrix (MLB), the Touareg measures 4,878 mm long (+77 mm); 2,193 mm wide (+44 mm) and 1,702 mm high (-7 mm). Boot space is rated at 800 litres or 1,800 litres with the rear seats folded down.

Customers in the UK can opt for the Innovision Cockpit that marries a 12.0-inch Active Info Display and a 15.0-inch TFT Discover Premium infotainment to create an immersive and interactive cabin for the occupants. Other creature comfort options include pneumatic massage front seats, panoramic sliding sunroof (the largest ever on a Volkswagen), 30-colour LED ambient lighting and more.

At launch, the Touareg is offered with a sole 3.0-litre V6 TDI turbodiesel engine that kicks out 286 hp and a peak torque of 600 Nm paired to a conventional eight-speed automatic. Drive is transferred to all four corners via the 4MOTION all-wheel-drive system that can transfer 70 per cent of available power to the front axles or up to 80 per cent to the rear axles when required.

Century sprint on the V6 TDI equipped Touareg is rated at 6.1 seconds while top speed is registered at 235 km/h. A detuned 231 hp 3.0-litre V6 TDI and a 340 hp 3.0-litre turbocharged V6 petrol engine will be available for the UK market towards the end of the year. The 367 hp plug-in hybrid powertrain that is planned for China will also be available in Europe, but the company did not commit to a timeline.

The Touareg is also equipped with all the latest driver assistance system such as Night Vision, Traffic Jam and Roadwork Lane Assist (semi-autonomous driving in traffic up to 60 km/h), Front Cross Traffic Assist, active all-wheel steering and a new roll stabilisation system with electromechanically controlled anti-roll bars.

Pricing for the all-new Volkswagen Touareg in the UK starts from £51,595 (RM274k) with deliveries to commence in the second half of 2018. The Touareg model was officially on sale in Malaysia for a brief period in 2007 but has since dropped from the local line up.
