Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) has revealed the latest additions to its Ingenium powertrain family. Joining the 2.0-litre diesel is an all-new four-cylinder Ingenium petrol engine and a new automatic gearbox.
The in-house developed all-aluminium petrol engine is the company’s most advanced powerplant developed to date. It incorporates new technology ranging from electrohydraulic valvetrain, integrated exhaust manifold, and twin-scroll turbocharger with ceramic ball bearing technology. Such enhancements increase power by 25 percent and reduces fuel consumption by 15 percent.
Complementing the new all-aluminium engine is a brand new eight-speed dual-clutch transmission known as Transcend. Lightweight and compact, the new gearbox will fit in longitudinal rear- and all-wheel drive models. It’s claimed to improve offroading experience and offers superior driving dynamics as well.
The new powertrains are set to debut in most, if not all Jaguar or Land Rover vehicles by 2017. At the same time, this effectively ends JLR’s dependence of Ford’s EcoBoost engines and ZF’s automatic gearboxes.
Presently, the Ingenium diesel engine can be found under the bonnet of the Land Rover Discovery Sport and both the Jaguar XE and XF. Its range-topper 2.0-litre turbocharged oil burner makes 178 hp and 420 Nm. The Ingenium diesel has yet to be offered in Malaysian Land Rovers and Jaguars. The recently launched Discovery Sport is still sold with the older 2.2-litre diesel unit.
