Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) announced their new engine family called Ingenium in a move to reduce carbon dioxide emissions while providing optimum performance at the same time. Available in both petrol and diesel, Ingenium will provide maximum flexibility of the engine to be used throughout JLR’s future products.
A 2-litre diesel called the AJ200D will be the first Ingenium engine to go into production, which probably will be powering the soon-to-be-revealed XE compact saloon. The new diesel is said to have 17 per cent less friction compared to the current diesel engine in JLR’s range. With less friction, it should contribute to better engine response and efficiency. Also contributing to better efficiency is the new engine weighs up to 80kg less than the current equivalent engine.
All Ingenium engines will be turbocharged, with a base layout of 500 cc per cylinder it will be scalable up or down to accomodate different applications. This means we could see a 1.5-litre 3-cylinder of the Ingenium or even a 3-litre 6-cylinder version powering various JLR’s vehicles. The flexibility doesn’t end there, as Ingenium is also designed to support manual and automatic transmissions as well as electrified hybrid drive systems.
Jaguar Land Rover Director of Powertrain Engineering, Ron Lee said “Being configurable and flexible are the two key strands of Ingenium’s DNA because we have future-proofed our new engines from the outset. Ingenium will be able to accept new advances in fuel, turbocharging, emissions, performance and electrification technologies when they are ready and accessible to be deployed.”
