The Jaguar Type 00’s steering wheel is designed to handle over 1,000 hp

Jaguar’s rebranding has put the brand in a chaotic spotlight. Between a new logo and a car-less launch video, the campaign went so poorly that the company is already hunting for a new advertising agency. Yet, because the drama has everyone talking, it might just be the most effective case of ‘mission failed successfully’ in recent memory.

Now, we finally have some hardware to back up the hype. The first vehicle born from this new identity is the Type 00 (pronounced “type zero zero”), which recently had its interior partially revealed. Underneath the polarising design, Jaguar has confirmed the Type 00 will be a serious performer.

The four-door GT is set to feature a tri-motor powertrain producing more than 1,000 hp and 1,300 Nm of torque, complete with “intelligent torque vectoring” and air suspension with twin-valve active dampers. Range is equally ambitious, with a targeted WLTP-rated 770 km on a single charge and the ability to add up to 321 km of range with just 15 minutes of fast charging.

The latest look at the interior, shared by Sidewalk Hustle and Tristan Banning on Instagram, confirms a multi-function steering wheel designed to handle that massive 1,000 hp output. The cockpit features a column-mounted gear shift lever and a dashboard layout heavily inspired by the original concept, which featured three hand-finished brass lines and a 3.2-metre-long brass spine splitting the cabin.

While the production version retains the large digital driver’s display, Jaguar has curiously covered the central emblem on the wheel. It takes little guesswork to assume it will feature the new branding, though one wonders if the backlash might tempt the company to bring back a hint of its heritage.

As for the rest of the Type 00, we will have to wait until the official debut to see what is under the camouflage. Based on the silhouette, the production-bound model looks remarkably similar to its concept sibling, though it remains to be seen if the final car will feature the glassless tailgate.
