BMW 520d Sport launched in Malaysia, gets new engine and priced at RM355k

The BMW 520d Sport launched here by BMW Group Malaysia isn’t a latecomer to the playing field of executive sedans. Instead, it has sold been alongside its other F10 siblings all along, so for those who have been eyeing the 5-Series, you will be happy to know that the 520d Sport comes with the Munich carmaker’s latest diesel engine, and this particular trim will only be limited to 50 units.

Introduced in conjunction with WTA’s 2015 BMW Malaysian Open in KL, the limited-run 520d Sport benefits from an updated 2.0-litre turbodiesel engine that now makes 190 hp at 4,000 rpm and 400 Nm of torque from 1,750 rpm, up from the previous 184 hp and 380 Nm. The engine is paired to ZF’s eight-speed automatic gearbox driving the rear wheels.

The goodies don’t just end there for the Sport. Outside, it dons the brand’s M Aerodynamic body kit, front and rear bumper included. It also sits on 18-inch twin-five spoke wheels wrapped with 245/45 R18 series tyres at the front and fatter 275/40 R18 tyres at the rear while riding on suspension with Dynamic Damping Control. The LED headlights also feature the brand’s adaptive lighting technology.

Inside, you get the sportier M leather steering wheel and a multifunctional instrument display in the form of a 10.5-inch digitised instrument cluster.

What’s truly a steal here is that the 520d Sport, for all its additional kit, is sold for the same price as the facelifted 520d at RM354,800.00 (OTR without insurance). Again, it’s only limited to a 50-unit run beginning 1 April, after which the 520d will no longer come with the Sport kit. It will however, retain the updated engine and you can always spec up the car through BMW’s Original Accessories.

At that price range, you could also look towards its closest rival, the Mercedes-Benz E300 BlueTEC Hybrid. The Merc also soldiers a diesel engine (204 hp and 500 Nm) that’s paired to a 20 kW (250 Nm) electric motor, channeling drive to the rear wheels via a seven-speed dual clutch transmission. It’s competitively priced at RM349k, so we suggest giving both cars a test drive to truly find out where you’d rather put your money down.
