Subaru is keeping manuals alive with three new models planned for 2027

Subaru is keeping the manual dream alive, with three new manual transmission (MT) models due to be unveiled soon.

Announced during Round 3 of the Super Taikyu Series 2026 last weekend, the company said that “All of these models will incorporate the technology and knowledge cultivated through our motorsports activities and are planned to be delivered as ‘cars that allow you to enjoy driving more easily.”

According to a report by Japan’s Kuruma News, citing Subaru Director, Senior Managing Executive Officer and Chief Technology Officer Tetsuo Fujinuki, the cars are planned to be launched by 2027.

On the left appears to be a WRX variant, identifiable by the large bonnet scoop visible beneath the camouflage. According to Fujinuki, it will mark the return of the TY85 transmission used in previous WRX STI models.

Meanwhile, the vehicle on the right, with its steeply cut tailgate appears to be an Impreza hatchback or Levorg derivative. A subtle bonnet bulge suggests a sportier variant, and Fujinuki confirmed it will be a five-door hatchback. He added that it will be the production version of the Performance-B STI Concept shown at last year’s Japan Mobility Show, with a character distinct from both the WRX and BRZ.

Lastly, the model in the centre appears to be a BRZ. While the coupe is already available with a manual transmission, the report claims it will be a “Subaru BRZ Complete Car”, potentially based on the limited-edition BRZ STI Sport Type RA introduced last year. If so, it could receive a host of STI-developed and motorsport-inspired upgrades, resulting in a lighter, sharper and more engaging driving experience.

As mentioned earlier, Subaru says all three models will incorporate lessons and technologies derived from its motorsport activities. One example is the Super Taikyu Series, where the company is currently campaigning a race-prepared Impreza hatchback known as the HiPerfX Ver.II.

The car features a host of race-focused upgrades, including revised aerodynamics, suspension, wheels and brakes. Under the bonnet is Subaru’s familiar FA24 2.4-litre four-cylinder boxer engine, shared with the GR86, BRZ and WRX, but paired with a twin-scroll turbo. Output is increased to 375 hp and 525 Nm, while upgrades such as a high-heat-dissipating intercooler and strengthened pistons are said to improve both performance and efficiency.

While Subaru has yet to confirm what upgrades each of the teased models will receive, the HiPerfX Ver.II could provide a glimpse of what’s to come. The only concern now is whether they will be offered globally or remain Japan-exclusive limited editions.
