Petrol and diesel prices in Malaysia still among the lowest in ASEAN, says Info Dept

Despite the ongoing war in the Middle East, petrol and diesel prices in Malaysia remain among the lowest in the region, the Information Department of Malaysia has announced through an infographic published onto its social media pages.

For the week beginning May 28, 2026, prices for unsubsidised RON95 fuel in Malaysia is set at RM3.92 per litre, although Malaysians with a valid MyKad will only be paying RM1.99/L at the pumps – at least for the first 200 litres per month – courtesy of the Budi Madani RON95 (Budi95) subsidy programme.

In comparison, Singaporeans are now forking out some RM9.55 per litre of RON95 petrol, the highest among other ASEAN countries, and even those in oil-producing Saudi Arabia are still paying RM2.47/L, according to the infographic. Only Brunei has lower RON95 prices within the region, coming in at RM1.65/L, and even when compared to our unsubsidised prices, only Brunei and Indonesia (RM2.87/L) are lower.

As for diesel, Singaporeans are now paying an eye-watering RM12.07 per litre, while on the opposite end of the spectrum, Brunei’s diesel fuel is currently priced at just RM0.96 per litre. For Malaysians, diesel subsidy has now been rationalised, which means those in Peninsular will pay RM4.87/L, while prices are still capped at RM2.15/L for East Malaysia.

The Malaysian government offers a monthly cash assistance programme for diesel fuel via BUDI Madani Diesel, which can be applied by Malaysian citizens earning below RM100,000 per year, driving a non-luxury diesel vehicle under 10 years old, or registered farmers and smallholders with an annual turnover of under RM300,000.

Those eligible now receive RM400 per month to subsidise their diesel fuel costs, up from RM200 when the programme first began. Alternatively, the Subsidised Diesel Control System (SKDS) “fleet cards” for businesses caps diesel prices at RM2.15/L for goods vehicles, RM1.88/L for land public transport (buses, taxis, ambulance, fire engines), and RM1.65 for fishermen.
