Proton eMAS 7’s Geely twin to get larger EV battery in Australia – Malaysia to get update too?

The Geely EX5, the international twin of the Proton eMAS 7 (stylised as e.MAS 7) EV, will soon be getting a new update in Australia soon – and according to local certification documents sighted by Drive, the key upgrade for the 2026 model will come in the form of a larger battery.

Instead of the 60.22 kWh Aegis Short Blade LFP battery pack that is equipped in the car launched there last year, as well as the Proton eMAS 7 here in Malaysia, the new 2026 Geely EX5 in Australia will also be offered with a larger 68.39 kWh battery, the document suggests, lining up with newer overseas versions of the fully electric SUV.

In China, the larger battery has significantly raised its driving range up from 530 km to now 610 km – although those figures are based on the much more lenient CLTC test protocol. We expect WLTP figures to be around the 470 km mark, which is still a significant improvement over the 410 km currently offered on the range-topping Proton eMAS 7 Premium.

The Geely Galaxy E5, as it is known in its home country of China, also received a more powerful 218 hp (160 kW) motor as part of the new updates, although that is already standard-fit item here on our Malaysian Proton eMAS 7, as well as the Australian model. The rest of the specifications for the updated model – at least according to the Australian certification documents – also seem to match that of the existing car in the country.

Back home in Malaysia, the Proton eMAS 7 has been given an update recently as it enters CKD local assembly here, with new additions coming in the form of a powered tailgate (now standard equipment across the range), and upgraded safety kit. Powertrain, however, remains completely unchanged from before.

It’s currently unclear if the new larger battery will make it into our local car, as the existing 60.22 kWh pack is still offered in China. The smaller 49.52 kWh variant, however, has since been discontinued in its home country, and it’s possible that the model could also be axed here in the future if supply for the smaller unit runs dry – the Aegis Short Blade batteries are produced by Geely themselves in China.
