Many love to claim that the ‘90s did it best – Guns N’ Roses were at their peak, Friends was airing weekly, and Michael Jordan dominated the NBA. While Volvo didn’t launch its XC90 SUV during that golden decade, the number ’90’ has since become a hallmark of the brand. First introduced in 2002, the XC90 set the tone for Volvo’s modern SUV lineup. Now, in the age of electrification, Volvo builds on that legacy with the all-electric EX90—blending their proven SUV formula with cutting-edge electric vehicle (EV) technology.
The EX90 retains an unmistakably Volvo silhouette, with sleek lines and a boxy yet elegant design. Distinguishing it from the updated XC90 are its clever lighting elements—daytime running lights that fold away to reveal the high beams. And as an EV, it no longer needs a front grille, so the iconic ‘Iron Mark’ now sits on a smooth panel instead.
Peek at the top of the car, and you’ll notice a small bump right above the front windshield. This houses the car’s highly advanced LiDAR system which enables a wide array of driver assistance features such as Autonomous emergency braking system, “Next-generation” Pilot Assist adaptive cruise control system, and more.
Volvo says the EX90 will be capable of supporting SAE Level 3 autonomous driving via an over-the-air (OTA) update. According to the Swedish carmaker, the vehicle is already “hardware-ready,” but the system still requires further development before it can be safely rolled out on Malaysian roads.
